I’m super new to Walmart Marketplace and already stuck hard.
I’m trying to list a product manually in Seller Center (US account). Filled out everything I can find – title, UPC, category, price, images, all the obvious stuff. But every single time I hit submit, it just errors out and won’t publish.
The message is super vague too: “An error occurred. Please try again later.” No code, no highlighted field, zero direction.
Here’s what I’ve already tried:
-
Shortened the title, cleaned up keywords
-
Double-checked my UPC – it’s valid and unused
-
Tried 3 different relevant categories
-
Switched between Chrome, Firefox, Edge
-
Cleared cache and cookies multiple times
-
Saved as draft first, then tried publishing
Nothing works. Drafts save fine, but publishing just fails every time.
I’ve heard Walmart’s manual listing is pretty buggy and that bulk spreadsheet uploads are more reliable. Is that actually true? If so, where do I get the right template, and is there any trick to filling it out?
Is this just a known Walmart headache right now, or am I missing something obvious?
Any help would be a lifesaver. Thanks everyone.

I had this exact same problem when I started last year. Let me save you some pain:
Save CONSTANTLY. Walmart times you out after ~20 minutes of inactivity. If you’re typing slow or researching, you will lose work. Save as draft every few minutes.
Stick to Chrome only.Firefox and Safari have consistent weird glitches with Seller Center. Edge works sometimes, but Chrome is the only safe bet.
Check if your account is fully verified. New accounts often have listing functions locked until review is done. Go to Settings → Account Info and make sure nothing’s pending.
Try uploading early US morning.Their system gets crushed during peak hours. I’ve had 10x better luck around 6–8 AM ET than afternoon.
If nothing works, escalate the case. Don’t just say “listing won’t work.” Give them SKU, category, error screenshot, and everything you tried. More info = faster fix.
Hang in there. Once one listing goes live, the rest are smooth.
OP, that generic error is Walmart’s favorite way to say “something broke but we won’t tell you what.”
No code makes it annoying, but these are the most common culprits I’ve seen:
Walmart needs valid, registered UPCs. If yours is new and not in their system yet, it’ll fail silently. Try a different one, or look into GTIN exemption (way harder than Amazon).
Toys, electronics, apparel – most of these need pre-approval. You can pick the category, but it won’t let you list until you’re cleared. Check Growth Opportunities for restrictions.
Some categories only show extra fields after you choose certain options – like battery info for electronics. Expand every panel and double-check.
Walmart is strict: JPEG only, 1000x1000 minimum, pure white background, no text or logos. A bad image can cause that exact vague error.
What I’d do:
You’ve got this. Walmart gets way easier after the first live listing.
Totally normal Walmart frustration – manual listing is notoriously flaky.
The real fix: use the bulk upload template.
Go to Items → Add Items → Add Items in Bulk, then grab the template for your exact category (they’re all different). Fill it out, save as Excel or CSV, and upload.
If it still fails, go to upload history and download the error report – it’ll show exactly which row and column is broken. 90% of the time it’s some random required attribute you didn’t even know was mandatory, like color or material, even for single-variation items.
Also, Walmart’s system can take 15–30 minutes to process. Don’t just keep reuploading – wait and check later.
One last tip: if you’re really stuck, open a case and attach the error report. They can fix it on their end sometimes – just expect to wait 2–3 days for a reply.
