Hey everyone,
TikTok has opened up cross-border store registration, which is a low-barrier entry for Amazon sellers and other e-commerce folks looking to expand.
One thing that trips up a lot of sellers is category approval — especially for beauty & personal care. Service providers charge anywhere from $150 to $400 for this, but honestly, it’s not that hard to do yourself.
I applied on my own and got approved in 4 business days. Here’s exactly how to do it.
Step 1: Find the Category Application Page
Go to your TikTok Seller Center and find the section for adding new categories. Click through to the subcategory you want to apply for (e.g., skincare, hair tools, etc.).
Step 2: Submit the Required Documents
Here’s what you’ll need:
-
Business registration documents (EIN, company filing, etc.)
-
Screenshots from your existing e-commerce platform (Amazon, etc.)
-
Brand authorization letter
-
Trademark registration certificate (registered ® trademark)
-
Product certifications (FDA, FCC, etc.)
Step 3: What to Submit for Amazon Sellers
If you’re using Amazon as your existing platform, submit screenshots of:
-
Account Health page
-
Seller Information page
-
Sales Dashboard (showing the last 12 months of sales)
Step 4: Brand & Trademark Docs
If your trademark is registered under the same business entity as your TikTok store, you can just submit the trademark certificate as both the “brand authorization” and “trademark proof.”
Step 5: Certifications — The Part Where Most People Get Stuck
This is the tricky part. A few things to know:
-
Not every subcategory needs FDA approval. For example, hair tools (like curling irons) may only need FCC certification. Don’t assume you need FDA — check the specific subcategory.
-
FDA reports have an expiration date — usually 1 year. Make sure the report matches the specific product category you’re applying for.
-
Most legit suppliers/manufacturers can provide these reports. If they don’t have them, that’s a red flag.
Step 6: Wait for Review
After submitting, it usually takes 3–5 business days to get a decision.
A Few Notes on Logistics (From the Comments)
-
Shipping from Amazon FBA: If you’re using Amazon inventory, add all your FBA warehouse addresses to your TikTok store’s warehouse list. Screenshot your inventory page to show where stock is held.
-
Third-party logistics (3PL): Once volume grows, many sellers switch to a dedicated 3PL for better margins and control. Start with FBA to test, then scale to a 3PL once you have consistent sales.
-
IP address: Use a US or Hong Kong IP when logging into your seller account. Domestic (China) IPs sometimes have login issues. TikTok doesn’t currently flag IP association aggressively, but it’s safer to use a stable setup.
Final Thoughts
Category approval isn’t rocket science. If you have your documents ready, you can do it yourself and save the fee. The only real hurdle is the certification reports — make sure your supplier can provide them before you commit.
Good luck — hope this saves someone a few hundred bucks.
