Non-UK resident with UK eBay account — stuck on NINO requirement

I have an eBay UK account registered as a UK-based seller, but I'm not actually a UK resident.

eBay's now asking me to provide a National Insurance number (NINO) for verification, and I don't have one — and I can't get one because I don't live or work in the UK.

A few questions for anyone who's been in this spot:

Is there any legit alternative to a NINO? Has anyone used other ID instead?
What actually happens if I ignore it? Will they limit payouts or restrict selling?
Will upgrading to a business account fix this? I can register a UK company, but the director doesn't have a NINO.

Only looking for legal, above-board options — not trying to use fake info or someone else's number. Just trying to figure out my real choices here.

Went through this last year. Registered a UK Ltd online in a day (cost around £100–200 including the Companies House fee), got the certificate, then messaged eBay to switch my account to business. They asked for the company number and a utility bill in the company name. After that, no more NINO requests.
A little hassle upfront but 100% worth it if you're serious about selling here.

Important note: if you're a sole trader, the NINO has to match the account holder. eBay does check this. Don't use someone else's — it will get flagged down the line.
Registering a UK Ltd company is relatively affordable (around £100–200 through Companies House or formation agents) and totally solves the NINO requirement. Just make sure director details match your ID.

From what I've seen, eBay gives you around 2 months before they start restricting payouts if you don't submit the NINO. Eventually the account will get limited. This is part of eBay's new 2026 reporting requirements to HMRC – once you hit around £1,700 in sales or 30 transactions, they're required to collect your NINO. Your best bet really is to switch to a business account if you want to keep selling.

You need to upgrade to a business account. NINO is only for individuals and sole traders. If you register as a limited company, eBay will ask for your company documents instead — no NINO required. That's the cleanest path by far.
