I was digging for products lately and found one that caught my eye.

It’s ranking inside 1k on Amazon – decent size, not overly competitive yet.

Checked Google Trends for the main keyword.

It was completely flat for years, then suddenly took off around July, up 4–5x normal. Forecast still looks up.

The product itself looks… pretty normal. Nothing crazy special.

I’m trying to figure out:

What actually makes a product like this suddenly spike in demand?

Not talking about masks or holiday stuff. More like those small viral products — similar to the cat paw cup that blew up on social media a while back.

How do you guys build that trend sense for Western markets?

Back in China we catch early signs on apps like Xiaohongshu or Weibo, but over here I mostly just see Facebook groups full of review swaps. Not helpful for spotting real trends early.

I know a few common triggers:

  • Influencer / celebrity shoutout

  • Random big event or news

  • Seasonal / holiday (not this one)

But this product was dead flat for years, then popped.

I really want to tell the difference:

  1. Flash in the pan — spikes and dies fast

  2. Real sustainable growth

As a small seller, I obviously want the second one. But I can’t do that unless I understand why it blew up. Otherwise I’m just stepping into a trap.

Does anyone have a system for reverse-engineering viral products?

Where do you trace the source — TikTok, Instagram, news, something else?
